Book Review

A short read that speaks to the hardship of the marginalized. Portions of the novella were challenging to get through due to the subject matter and language. Ultimately, it was a tale that cast light on the vulnerable.

The first movie adaptation of Of Mice And Men was released in 1939. I can see how this book resonated with depression-era America. The book discusses the lives of migrant workers who lived hand-to-mouth, the concept of the American dream being unattainable, as well as, segregation, isolation, disability, class inequity, and the cruelty of society.

Plot

George Milton and Lenny Small are two migrant workers that travel with one another. George is thin and smaller than Lenny. Lenny is a large strong man, with the mind of a child. The two dream of one day having their own land to farm.

They travel from one job to another - the only constant being each other. George protects his companion, but also is exhausted by the responsibility. He is not always a likable character due to his outbursts of frustration.

Lenny is sweet and naive. However, Lenny isn't the only marginalized character in this book. You'll find this is a book about unprotected peoples and how our society treat them.

Additional Comments

As I mentioned previously, there is a 1939 movie adaptation of the book. You can watch it for FREE at this link. I was curious how early-ish 20th-century film would approach the racism and segregation storyline in the book. To my surprise, it was included in the film.

Gary Sinise directed and co-starred in another adaptation of John Steinbeck's classic novella. It was released in 1992. Sinise plays the character of George alongside John Malkovich playing Lenny.

You can watch it free on YouTube. Of the two movies, I recommend the 1992 adaptation.

He was born in Salinas, California, and spent much of his life in the state, which served as the setting for many of his novels. Steinbeck's works often explored themes of social and economic injustice, as well as the lives of ordinary people trying to survive during difficult times.
